History

Founded in 1983, Le Centre d'apprentissage parallèle of Montreal (CAP) is a regional mental health community organization. Over the years, it has become a full-fledged creative hub. Through art, CAP helps people living with mental illness reintegrate into the community and the workforce. With an eye to the future, CAP is continuously innovating to meet mental health needs.

CAP is incorporated (3 founders: Irmgard Maier, Marie Emmanuelle Jamet, Yvon Lamy).

1985

- CAP's program is recognized by the RRASMQ
- CAP joins the board of directors
- First funding
- May 5: acess to services
- June 13: official opening (parents, referring friends representing the mental health network).

1994

- Beginning of the intensive program (4 days)
- Collaboration with CREP

1996

- Expansion with the ground floor 3500 square feet
- Opening of the Employability Program (Transition)
- Collaboration of CREP and Emploi-Québec

2006

"De l’ombre à la lumière" organization of the symposium on alternative resources in mental health with Racor.

2009

- Co-founder Irmgard Maier retires and Lorena Garrido takes over as executive director.
- CAP's 25th anniversary
- Birth of the MOI M’AIME project (Maison de la culture Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie)

2011

Xavier Bonpunt is appointed to the general management of CAP.

2012

First partnership with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Totemuse project).

2014

First MOI M’AIME with celebrities (Galerie MX).

2015

It's CAP's 30th anniversary! To mark this milestone anniversary, a retrospective of works produced at CAP has been organized at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Michel de la Chenelière'studio from November 4, 2015 to January 11, 2016.

2020

Three-year partnership with the National Bank.

2021

New partnership with Desjardins to create youth Art-therapy workshops.
